17 Filipino Seafarers Held Hostage in Yemen Return to the Philippines
Seventeen Filipino seafarers of MV Galaxy Leader, who were held hostage by the Houthis in Yemen for over a year, have finally returned home. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed their safe arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 on Thursday at 9:31 p.m. via Oman Air Flight 843.
Warm Welcome at NAIA
The seafarers were greeted by high-ranking government officials, including Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, and Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista. Their arrival marked the end of a 428-day ordeal that began in November 2023, when the Israeli-owned MV Galaxy Leader was hijacked in the Red Sea by Houthi forces.
Immediate Support for the Seafarers
Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured that the crew members will have time to reunite with their families and undergo necessary health tests to ensure they are in good condition.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) also announced that it would provide comprehensive assistance, including:
- Financial Aid: Each seafarer will receive financial support to help ease their transition back to normal life.
- Counseling and Stress Debriefing: Mental health professionals will help the seafarers process their experiences.
- Monitoring During Recovery: OWWA will check on the seafarers regularly to ensure their well-being.
Opportunities for Returning to Work
OWWA Administrator Arnell Ignacio mentioned that the agency is committed to supporting the seafarers’ reintegration into the workforce. They may avail of OWWA’s various reintegration programs once they are ready to resume work. These programs include upskilling initiatives, livelihood assistance, and employment facilitation.
A Grateful Return
The seafarers’ return highlights the efforts of the Philippine government, diplomatic negotiations, and support from international allies. This successful repatriation is a testament to the commitment to protecting the welfare of Filipino workers abroad.
