Four individuals, including two Philippine Army soldiers, lost their lives while 12 others were injured in an ambush in Sumisip, Basilan, on Wednesday, January 22. The incident occurred during a security operation in support of a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) mission in Barangay Lower Cabengbeng.
UNDP Mission in Basilan
The UNDP representatives were conducting a validation mission and stakeholder coordination under the “Project Modelling Livelihood Initiatives.” This initiative aims to empower local communities through sustainable livelihood programs. The mission was organized through the Joint Peace and Security Committee (JPSC) under the Joint Normalization Committee (JNC), with assistance from local leaders.
Details of the Attack
According to Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, commander of the Philippine Army’s 101st Infantry Brigade, troops from the 32nd Infantry Battalion encountered gunfire from lawless elements led by Najal Buena and Oman Hajal Jalis, known figures in the region for their involvement in violent clan conflicts.
The attackers were reportedly backed by some members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Two gunmen from the group were reported killed, but their exact number of wounded remains undetermined. The ambush also led to the burning of a KM450 military vehicle, adding to the losses incurred by the military.
Tribute to Soldiers and Call for Accountability
Brig. Gen. Luzon praised the soldiers for their courage in protecting the UNDP mission and maintaining peace in the province. “The 101st Infantry Brigade pays tribute to the bravery and professionalism of the soldiers who defended the peace process and ensured the safety of the UNDP team,” Luzon said.
He also condemned the involvement of MILF members in the attack, urging the group’s leadership to take immediate action against those involved. Luzon reassured Basilan residents that this incident was isolated and that the province remains secure.
Condemnation from Leaders and Agencies
Lieutenant General Antonio Nafarrete of the Western Mindanao Command extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. He vowed that the military would pursue the perpetrators to end their violent activities.
Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. described the ambush as a “cowardly act” aimed at disrupting Basilan’s progress toward peace. Galvez emphasized the immediate deployment of peace mechanisms, such as the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities and the Joint Peace and Security Teams, to de-escalate tensions and ensure an impartial investigation.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Gustavo Gonzalez expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives. “The United Nations expresses sympathies with those affected and their families. No UN personnel were in the immediate vicinity of the incident,” he said.
Ensuring Stability in Basilan
Government officials and military leaders have reiterated their commitment to peace and stability in Basilan. Efforts are underway to address the underlying causes of violence and hold accountable those responsible for the attack.
