Baguio City has recorded its first case of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), according to the city’s Public Information Office (PIO). The case involves a 28-year-old male who was diagnosed with the milder MPXV Clade II strain.
The city’s health services office confirmed that the patient had already completed the required isolation period and was officially released on January 17.
Mpox Clade II: How It Spreads
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa explained that Mpox Clade II is primarily transmitted through close and intimate skin-to-skin contact, as well as through objects that have been touched by infected individuals with active skin lesions.
Government’s Mpox Response
Despite the rising number of mpox cases in the country, the Department of Health (DOH) assured the public that its response strategy includes:
✅ Prompt testing
✅ Contact tracing
✅ Home care to break chains of transmission
The health agency also clarified that it will not impose border control measures or community quarantines (lockdowns) in response to the situation.
Residents are encouraged to remain informed, practice proper hygiene, and seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms such as rashes, blisters, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
