Sparkle’s very own Skye Chua is ready to face the challenge and thrill of representing the Philippines at the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games in Italy. Speaking to GMA Regional TV News, the talented figure skater shared her goals, mindset, and key lessons from what she describes as one of the most demanding preparations of her career.
Tournament Preparation
Days before flying to Turin, Italy, the 21-year-old University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman student detailed the rigor and intensity of her training. Rating it a “10” on the difficulty scale, Skye explained that every aspect of her routine had been deliberately heightened for this prestigious competition.
“It’s a 10 because I really intensified my training,” Skye shared. “Even if it’s mostly fundamentals—like on-ice training and strength-and-conditioning (S&C) drills—the intensity of each session was significantly ramped up.”
Skye emphasized how her strength and conditioning sessions played a critical role in preparing her body for the competition.
“The S&C part was more intense. I added more weights, more reps, and introduced exercises like Pilates, which really helped. These extra workouts are designed to strengthen the muscles I rely on for skating,” she said.
Her preparation required a highly disciplined schedule, with training taking place three times a week, often from early morning until 10 a.m. To accommodate this demanding routine, Skye adjusted her university class schedules and made compromises when necessary.
“When I have tapings or Sparkle commitments, if rescheduling isn’t possible, I sometimes miss school,” the Sports Science major explained. “But I always make sure to communicate properly. As long as I provide a valid excuse with proof, my university is very understanding.”
Training Camp Takeaways
Skye highlighted three critical lessons from her rigorous training: consistency, discipline, and maintaining a relaxed mindset.
“Consistency is key. I’ve been consistent with my preparation, and that makes a difference,” she said. “Discipline is just as important. Balancing school, Sparkle, and training was no easy task, but staying disciplined with my schedule made it manageable.”
The figure skater also underscored the importance of keeping a clear, relaxed mind, especially during high-pressure situations.
“Lastly, a relaxed mind is vital. When we overthink or get anxious, it directly impacts our performance. It’s about staying calm and focusing on what’s within our control,” she explained.
Figure Skating: An Art and a Sport
For Skye, figure skating is not just a sport—it’s a powerful art form that parallels her craft as an actress with Sparkle.
“Figure skating is an art form. The performance aspect is very similar to acting—how we connect with an audience and tell a story through our program,” she noted.
As both an actress and a national athlete, Skye thrives on the challenge of delivering a performance that balances technical precision with emotional connection.
“I skate because I love performing. It’s a mix of technical skills like spins and jumps, but grace and artistry are equally important,” she added.
Representing the Philippines
Skye carries the weight of being the only Filipino athlete competing in figure skating at the 32nd Winter Universiade. While the pressure is immense, she views this opportunity with gratitude and determination.
“There’s definitely pressure because I’m the only one representing the country and my university,” she admitted. “But I’m very grateful to have this opportunity. I want to stay calm, enjoy every moment, and give my personal best.”
As she prepares to compete against the world’s best in Italy, Skye Chua embodies the perfect blend of passion, discipline, and artistry—qualities that will undoubtedly inspire aspiring athletes and fans alike.
